Bakare vs Chidoka

Influencing the emergence of a successor should not be restricted to imposition of a successor. It is clear that we Nigerians do not know how to choose the right leaders. Most of us, and even others around the world, allow the exercise of our voting rights to be much more driven by sentiments than rational thinking. We therefore need some stabilizing factor, and this can come in the form of an institution nurturing and grooming future leaders who should meet minimum standards before being allowed to run for leadership positions and not an individual, such as the serving president handpicking a successor. This does not negate the principle of democratic process; it simply improves its efficiency in the same way that universities setting minimum standards for admission improves quality.
