The NCDC boss has said that they are short of finance, manpower and other indices in their battle against COVID-19. The hint that Chinese medical personnel are due in Nigeria in a few days by the health minister may be seen as an attempt to fill these gaps.

Now the question is: are the Chinese coming to teach our medical personnel what to do or they are coming to beef up the numbers and possibly work under their Nigerian counterparts? Since the world is unanimous in agreement that the Nigerian medical personnel have discharged their duties creditably well in the fight against COVID-19, it is hard to imagine the former is the case.

Why then are many Nigerians so upset? Is it because some sections of the Nigerian medical profession have not been carried along in the decision to bring in the Chinese? Is it because of the many underhand activities the Chinese have always been associated with? Is it because COVID-19 came from China? Suppose the minister had said the medical personnel would come from some other country not much ravaged by COVID-19? Or maybe Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu did not get the facts in the brief given him correctly? Let’s see how it goes.
