On learning about the launch of Amotekun, I thought it was a laudable move and said so. Then followed the storm on its legality. I was taken aback. It is hard to imagine how the SW, which knows ‘grammar’ (especially legal) more than anyone else would embark on such an elaborate colourful arrangement without tidying up the legal and diplomatic aspects of their action thereby leaving large room for vicious attacks. The AG’s public statement didn’t help matters. Solution?
- Continue verbal war? Nope.
- Dismantle Amotekun? Not attractive.
- Legal action? Equally not attractive and won’t even fully resolve the matter.
- Discussions involving all sides? Very, very attractive.
There is no doubt that there is serious security problem in the country now and Nigerians cannot reasonably be expected to wait forever for the FGN to solve it.
Suppose the SW governors had successfully sold the idea to all other states and the launching took place the same day throughout the country? Would the reactions have been the same?
Finally, in my opinion, it would have still been better for the whole country if the 36 state governors and FCT minister had utilized existing avenues to put unbearable pressure on the president and the NASS to give the security situation the attention it deserves. We certainly can’t continue the way we have been going.
