It is a well-known fact that Nigerian market is littered with substandard goods even in areas hitherto not known for much deviation from approved standards. Iron rods for instance, which are used in building construction, are now not only made of weaker material, but bear wrong specification on them such as 12mm diameter whereas the actual diameter is closer to 10mm. This has been on for several years and now seems acceptable to all. If the DG of SON (Standards Organization of Nigeria), Farouk Salim, speaking to TVC Special Interview aired this morning was telling us all that he knew, he cannot be said to be in control of his job. Otherwise, he was being economical with the truth.
The Nigerian society is well known for noncompliance, and those charged with the responsibility of ensuring compliance gladly look the other away. The rest of us sit-don-look, or at best complain and continue with our lives. And the decay continues
