While discussing the recently read budget by President Buhari on channels TV this morning, a certain expert was emphatic on the need to immediately put in place a population control policy.
While I agree with him that we need to urgently address our frightening population growth, I do not think a population growth policy is the first thing to do. Considering our literacy rate, religious and cultural attachments, I think an indirect method may be easier to implement and far more effective than control policies.
That method is EDUCATION. Massively increasing our literacy rate will naturally bring down the population growth rate without our having to talk about it directly to anyone. Other boosting and supportive measures may now follow.
The mass education measures should target moving the population far beyond merely acquiring the ability to read and write. Attempting to implement a population control policy now will be extremely problematic, and you know how good we are in policy implementation.
