Orji Uzo Kalu jailed 12 years for stealing N7.65b from poor Abia, after 12 years of trial. Relieved to hear that, but it would have been sweeter if the punishment had come quicker and much stiffer. 12 year-jail term seems like a pat on the wrist, almost nullifiable by 12 years of enjoyment after committing the crime. Inefficient judicial system, in a poor justice environment. I thought he said it was Obasanjo that framed him, because he was against Obasanjo’s third term bid. I am sure the name of the judge doesn’t sound anything like Obasanjo.
Again, a reminder that we are also part of the problem. Was he unknown in Abia state before he was voted into office? And allowed to rule for so long? The position of the court today is perfectly consistent with his reported background before and after he became governor. We expect more of such sentences on people of ‘Timbre and Calibre’ in our society.
